Chess in Seville, from the peña to the kiosk
Much of Seville’s chess happens in public. Blitz stages of the Circuito Urbano move between bars and kiosks of the city, rapid opens tour the bars of the Aljarafe, and clubs and peñas play from the civic centre of Pino Montano to Alcalá de Guadaíra, Gines, Brenes and Pilas. In January the city’s international open is played in the FIBES halls.

Chess960 around Seville
Two over-the-board Chess960 events turned up in the Seville area, both in 2025. In June a Fischerandom tournament was played in Alcalá de Guadaíra; its listing names the organiser only as “PAO”, and that abbreviation is the one link to the Peña Ajedrecística Oromana. In December Abgena Gines held its first Torneo Ajedrez960 at the Bar Parque de los Patos in Gines. No such event has been found for 2026.
In this variant the pieces behind the pawns start in a shuffled order, so memorised openings stop helping from the first move. Between local events it can be played online at ch960.com.

How the cards are kept
Every card rests on a page that anyone can open, most often a tournament listing, a club’s own site or a municipal notice, and each fact carries the day its page was read. The pages behind the present list were read up to .
Lists run from the freshest evidence of chess to the oldest, with no merit order. Where no page gives a fact, the card says “not stated by sources”. The status lines and the limits of the list are explained on about the list.
Is your club, bar or open missing?
Seasons start in September, blitz stages change bars, a peña finds a new room. If a card is out of date, or a place is not here at all, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
